System FRED to be deployed by foreign registry
West African Angola is to commission the registration system FRED in September
10 June, Prague - To register domains with the suffix .co.ao and .it.ao, the administrators of the Angolan top-level domain will use a Czech system called FRED (Free Registry of ENUM and Domains). This information has been released by representatives of the West African country during the ICANN meeting in Paris. The registration system FRED has been developed by employees of the CZ.NIC association. Since last October, the system has been used to administer the Czech top-level domain .cz and the Czech ENUM domain. The registration system FRED was released as open source in October 2008 and Angola is the first country to follow in the footsteps of the Czech Republic and implement the system.
“In implementing the new registration system for the .co.ao and .it.ao domain, we have co-operated with experts from the Czech Republic, Portugal, Poland and France. Primarily due to this co-operation we can today announce the deployment of FRED for the Angolan national registry," said Gregory Bernard during the ICANN meeting in Paris, who acted as project manager for the system implementation in Angola. "Currently, the registration system is under testing. These tests are planned to continue for two more months. Registry system for .co.ao and .it.ao domains is set to be finally launched into public operation in September," Gregory Bernard added.
The registration system FRED (http://fred.nic.cz/) was released by CZ.NIC as open source last October. Simultaneously, the association opened a public discussion to suggest eventually further modifications and improvements of the system. The Angolan administrators have already announced their intention to release the new Java connector for FRED as open source. Their further FRED extensions and enhancements may also be released as open source in the future.
"Thanks to the fact there are new FRED users, the community emerges, which can together develop and improve the system. We are very pleased to see such interest in the system and we hope that more countries will decide to deploy FRED in the near future," said Ondrej Filip, chief executive officer of the CZ.NIC association.
