Registration system (FRED)

FRED – Free Registry for ENUM and Domains – is open-source software for operating a domain registry and, operated directly by the CZ.NIC association. The system emphasizes performance, scalability, and deployment flexibility.

FRED

The registry for the decentralized administration of the .cz ccTLD and the Tier 1 registry for ENUM domains (0.2.4.e164.arpa) uses a registration system FRED .

Registrars communicate with the registry using the standard EPP protocol (as defined in RFC 3730–3734), with extensions and modifications required by the registry’s specific characteristics. Communication takes place over a TCP connection secured using TLS.

Tools for registrars

Each registrar shall be provided with a tool package including:

  • A fully functional client application for the access to the register – interactive command-line client. The client is written in the Python language and can be operated on all systems where the Python interpreter is available

  • Configuration necessary for connecting to the testing instance of DSDng

  • Developer library of the Python language for easier integration into other applications

Documentation and manuals for each tool are included in the distribution package.

Testing instance of the system

For the registrars developing systems for the registration of CZ domains we have prepared a testing instance, where it is possible to register domains in the .CZ zone. This instance is open for testing to anyone. Testing instance of the system is accessible via the EPP interface on the following server (port 700):

epp.demo.regtest.nic.cz

Access to the testing server is authorized using an SSL certificate and a private SSL key. Accredited registrars use for access SSL certificate and a private SSL key delivered individually to each registrar together with the login username and password. The technical specifications of the certificate request are defined in The Rules of Technical Communication .

For non-registrars

Authorization credentials are available for those interested in testing who are not accredited registrars; these can be found in the downloadable files.

The latest version of the client application, configured for access to this instance, is also available. Simply unzip the archive and then run the fred-client script.

Important notice

The versions of the software for testing may be ahead of the production versions.

CZ.NIC reserves the right to suspend or modify this instance of the system anytime, including deletion of current data in the register.

Testing instance of the system

For the verification of data saved in the testing database, standard check and info queries via the EPP interface may be used, as well as the following services:

WHOIS web service:

https://whois.regtest.nic.cz/whois/

WHOIS via whois server:

whois.regtest.nic.cz

RDAP service:

https://rdap.demo.regtest.nic.cz/

+ query suffix e.g.
/domain/FQDN nebo /entity/HANDLE

Production instance of the system

The production instance of the DSDng system is accessible via the EPP interface on the following server (port 700):

epp.nic.cz

The access to the production system is allowed only from IP addresses defined by a registrar and is set up based on a signed agreement (the setting up includes also a delivery of the SSL certificate, private SSL key and the username and password).

The technical specifications of the certificate request are defined in The Rules of Technical Communication .

The web whois service is available on www.nic.cz/whois .

The whois protocol server is on whois.nic.cz .
