First 10,000 CZ Domains in the New CZ.NIC Registration System

The domain registration pace is continuously rising; the ten-thousandth domain was registered after only three weeks from launch of the new registration system

Prague, Czech Republic – 23 October 2007 – The CZ.NIC association, administrator of the CZ national domain, today recorded the 10,000 CZ domain registration since the launch of their new registration system, FRED (Free registry for ENUM and Domain). The association thus currently keeps 348,000 CZ domains registered. The first 10,000 domains in the new registration system is an outstanding milestone partly because the domains were registered in a very short time, i.e. 22 days from the new system launch on this year's 1 October.

"Launch of the new registration system also brought along a significant price decrease, certainly awaited by many of our customers. This is undoubtedly the main reason why more and more new domains are registered every day," explained Ondřej Filip, executive director of CZ.NIC. "In addition, a great contribution to the existing state is the simplification of the registration process, making it easier to obtain a new domain address."

Migration to the new registration system meant mainly higher efficiency, simpler CZ domain registration and considerably lower operation costs of the registry. FRED is a very powerful and efficient system. According to the results of stress tests, it could for example easily manage even the registry of COM generic domains – the largest domain registry in world with over 65 million registered domains. FRED has been made available as open source software under the GNU GPL (General Public License). Thos who are interested can obtain the system at http://fred.nic.cz. The software is free for use, modification and further distribution.
