From today, viewers of the Czech Television can watch the new 10-episode animated series Datová Lhota, which will guide them through the world of computers and the Internet. The entertaining educational series is a co-production of the Czech Television, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University and the CZ.NIC Association, the Czech national domain administrator. The main goal of the series is to introduce children to various areas of computer science in an understandable way and to show them how computers and the Internet work. As part of the project, an educational website was also created to include educational videos, an online game and teaching resources for teachers and parents. The series will be broadcast as part of the show Planeta Yó on the Déčko channel.

In each episode of the series, three heroes – Kuba, Linda and computer enthusiast Marwin, travel to the virtual town of Datová Lhota to solve Kuba’s computer problems. During their adventures, they get to know how things work in the town. For example, that individual buildings symbolize running programs – “Movie Plaza” (“Filmov”) plays movies, while “Image Plaza” (“Obrázkov”) views pictures, or what the jobs of individual characters in the town are. They gradually learn how and what causes problems with the computer and the Internet and how to prevent and solve them.

“I am very happy that our Association was able to participate in the creation of the new series Datová Lhota. As a trained computer scientist, I see its merit mainly in the fact that it also familiarizes children with what is “under the hood”. As in, it doesn’t just teach how to use these technologies, but it also shows how they work. The colleagues of the Czech Television, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and from CZ.NIC have done some good work, which I hope will be appreciated especially by children,” Ondřej Filip, CEO of CZ.NIC, remarks on the new series.

The CZ.NIC has been working with the Czech Television for several years, and the cooperation lead to the creation of successful series Jak na Internet, Nauč tetu na netu or Nebojte se Internetu. “So when we received an offer for further interesting and beneficial cooperation, we did not hesitate and we decided to support a project that fits with our awareness-raising and educational activities. Nowadays, computer literacy is a necessity, and we welcome projects like this with open arms,” says Ondřej Písek, the Marketing Director of CZ.NIC.

However, the project doesn’t end with the TV series. It also includes the creation of the website www.decko.cz/datova-lhota, which offers the possibility to dig deeper into the topics of the individual episodes, using accompanying materials such as videos, an online game or teaching resources for teachers and parents.
