The CZ.NIC association, Czech national domain administrator and manufacturer of Turris network devices, announced the launch of a new version of the Turris Omnia secure router with automatic updates. In addition to high performance, it offers a unique security system which is provided by the Turris OS 4 operating system. In addition to automatic updates, which are not provided by ordinary routers, it prides itself on its unique firewall. The firewall reacts to threats identified by the Turris router network which then notifies the team in charge of the Turris project. The innovated Sentinel security system is a significant advancement in this effort. With its help, the automatic reactions to direct attacks are even faster and information preventing attacks on other routers is sent within seconds. Therefore, we can talk about immunisation of the Internet which benefits all, even the people not actively involved in the project.

“Although our unique Turris MOX modular router is currently stealing the spotlight, we did not forget about the Turris Omnia and its users. The silver Turris Omnia router is taking the whole project to the next level in the sense that the FCC mark makes it practically a global product,” said Ondřej Filip, the CEO of CZ.NIC association.
Safety comes first
Software updates in traditional routers have to be installed by the users themselves, who are usually unaware that updates are available and, consequently, do not update their devices. By contrast, Turris MOX and Turris Omnia will install security updates automatically. The worldwide network of Turris routers also helps detect new threats and attackers and combat them.
The Turris OS dramatically improves security for the users, which is very desirable in the context of the gradual growth of the Internet of Things (IoT). This is all the more dangerous since today’s network devices and IoT solutions are faced with a new threat – attackers who use people to mine cryptocurrencies or send malware without their knowledge. Thanks to its versatility, Turris MOX can also function as an access point or switch and thus provides cutting-edge security of all network elements in your home and office.
Unsung heroes of the Turris project
Community of the Turris users voluntarily involved in the project is one of the cornerstones on which the unmatched security of all Turris routers and devices stands. Their consent to analysis of attacks and traffic on their routers provides the project headquarters with valuable data which allow Turris to flexibly react to various network threats and protect all users.
“Thousands of users around the world take part in the Turris project, and every day, their help enables us to detect hundreds of attackers who try to take over other persons’ routers,” said Martin Prudek, developer of Turris dynamic firewall system. “We believe that Turris MOX and the FCC mark for Turris Omnia will help expand the Turris OS 4.0 on a global scale and thus provide even better collection of data and faster detection of any problems.”
Sentinel system for even more flexible security
Current security system of the Turris routers requires batch analysis of attacks on the network of routers with activated data collection in each case; only then is a new set of security rules for its firewall created. This process can take a while and the growing popularity of the Turris routers and the number of volunteers further increased the time required. Thanks to the Sentinel system, a major part of the process is better automated, distributed and accelerated. Routers now report the attacks in real-time and the system also evaluates them in real-time. When a threat is safely identified, the system can immediately inform other routers. The routers can then employ their defense mechanisms within seconds of the attack. The innovative system also helps the CZ.NIC non-profit organisation, which manages the Turris project, to scale the system and expand it as needed.
The new system of securing and collecting data can be enjoyed not only by the owners of the newest Turris MOX devices but also by the users of all the new silver Turris Omnia routers. Experienced users who own older models of Turris Omnia routers can opt for the manual installation. The more patient users can look forward to automatic update which will be available later this year and which will give them access to the latest features.
Not just a router
In addition to a high level of security, Turris Omnia also offers much broader opportunities in terms of its high performance and accessories. For example, the SFP connector allows for direct connection of the optical module. The combination of USB 3.0 high-speed interface and user-friendly configuration in the Turris OS, allows for easy creation of network-attached storage for smooth media sharing and fast backups of valuable data. The SIM card slot enables connection of an LTE modem, providing backup Internet connection using mobile networks.
