Turris MOX, a Czech router, has already received more than USD 100,000 on Indiegogo

The modular network device that boosts computer network security now also offers an 8port switch module due to popular demand.

A new Indiegogo campaign launched by CZ.NIC, the administrator of the Czech domain, raised more than USD 100,000 for the manufacture of Turris MOX, a modular network device. CZ.NIC has also made progress in developing new modules and introduced a pass through 8port switch to meet the needs of advanced users. So far, the Turris MOX Classic option has attracted the most backers, offering the full spectrum of router features. The project is now certified by Arrow, confirming the feasibility of the technical design.

“The popularity of Turris MOX makes us very happy and we greatly much appreciate all the feedback.” said Ondřej Filip, CEO of CZ.NIC. “In response to requests from our fans, the Indiegogo campaign now also features a new module with 8 Ethernet ports.”

A prototype of the Turris MOX modular device will be presented to the public for the first time at the Evening with Turris event. This event will take place on Thursday 19 April at 6 p.m., at the Faculty of Information Technology of Czech Technical University in Prague. The Turris MOX project will be presented personally by the CEO of CZ.NIC, Ondřej Filip, and the Project Team Leader, Patrick Zandl. The registration form for the event is available on the project website.

New pass through module

Users can configure their devices according to their needs – and that is just one of the advantages of the modular solution. CZ.NIC also recently introduced another advantage of its product when it swiftly responded to requests for a higher number of Ethernet ports, adding a chainable 8-port switch module to the offer. This module allows users to build a larger network with a higher number of cable-connected devices. If 8 ports are not enough, you can add another MOX E module and create a 16-port Gigabit switch. This means that the module can be used together with the MOX D SFP module, or the smaller MOX C Ethernet module, exceeding even the number of ports of the Turris Omnia.

A secure gate to the Internet

Software updates in traditional routers have to be installed by the users themselves, who are usually unaware that updates are available and, consequently, do not update their devices. This is all the more dangerous since today’s network devices and IoT solutions are faced with a new threat – attackers who use people to mine cryptocurrencies without their knowledge. Turris MOX will install security updates automatically. This dramatically improves security for the users, which is very desirable in the context of the gradual growth of the Internet of Things.

A compact server for everyone

Turris MOX can also serve as a compact server. It can run print services, serve as an email server or become a hub for a security camera system. Thanks to the SD card slot, it allows for easy transition between operating systems. This means that, in addition to the standard Turris OS, it also supports other Linux distributions. At the present time, CZ.NIC is already in contact with openSUSE and Debian developers concerning the compatibility with their distributions. This will be appreciated not only by open source enthusiasts, but also by start-ups and companies looking for suitable hardware platform for their own applications.

Easy shopping even for newbies

To make the choice of modules easier, pre-defined sets for specific uses will be available on Indiegogo and each potential backer can choose a configuration that precisely fits their needs. In addition, these sets will be fitted with tested SD cards with the Turris OS by the manufacturer.
