The European router Turris Omnia now supports RaspberryPi applications
Similar to RaspberryPi, Turris Omnia has an expansion connector for additional peripherals. In contrast to RaspberryPi, Turris Omnia has a limited number of signals, but it can still be used in many interesting projects.
Prague, 15 December 2015 – The developers of the self-updating open-source router Turris Omnia from the CZ.NIC association, the administrator of the Czech national domain, continue their successful campaign on the Indiegogo.com crowdfunding platform. The original goal of raising $100,000 was met in less than 24 hours. With the stretch goal of $250,000, which the project met 12 days after the campaign was launched, the development team pledged to deliver support for a library enabling easy control of the expansion connector known from RaspberryPi. This should allow developers from all over the world to use the Turris Omnia router as a direct part of their existing applications.
Similar to RaspberryPi, Turris Omnia has an expansion connector for additional peripherals. In contrast to RaspberryPi, Turris Omnia has a limited number of signals (10x GPIO, 1x I2C, 1x SPI and 1x UART), but it can still be used in many interesting projects.
“The Rpi.GPIO library for easy control of GPIO pins from the Python programming language has become very popular among RaspberryPi owners. We have decided to adapt that library for use on Turris Omnia. This will give RaspberryPi owners the opportunity to transfer their projects to the router, thus saving the need for one more running device at home, or make use of the higher computing capacity of Turris Omnia,” says Bedřich Košata, head of the CZ.NIC Laboratories, the R&D Department of the CZ.NIC association.
More experienced users will be able to use HATs, ready-made peripheries for RaspberryPi, which do not need a full set of signals. By renumbering signals in their service software and connecting them in the right way with the expansion connector, they can, for example, connect a small display to Turris Omnia.
The stretch goal for Turris Omnia currently includes advanced network monitoring including parental control and support for the Internet of Things. The target perk now is an extended three-year warranty which will become valid upon reaching the goal of $450,000.
