CZ.NIC Domain Report: A rise in the pace of new domains
A total of 131,907 new domains were added to the registry of the Czech national domain in 2011, the greatest annual growth in the history of the .CZ domain.
Prague, 11 April 2012 – At the end of 2011 the CZ.NIC Association recorded a total of 880, 708 domains with the .CZ suffix. This means that 131,907 new domains were added to the registry of Czech national domains, the greatest yearly increase in the history of the .CZ domain. Average monthly growth in new domains in 2011 was 19,490. Should this pace continue, as running statistics suggest it will, the one-millionth domain should appear in the CZ.NIC registry by the end of this year.
Annual statistics also show a rising trend in the number of domain holders among individuals. These now make up a 58 percent share of domains, whereas domains registered to organisations dropped by 8 percent over the previous year. Most holders have only one domain (425,350 holders); the largest number of .CZ domains registered to a single holder the last year was 4,054. In terms of regional distribution, most holders are from Central Bohemia, the least from the Karlovy Vary region.
As part of its report, CZ.NIC also conducted a content analysis of the .CZ domain. An random analysis of 1,200 websites showed that the greatest number of sites are company websites (41 percent), followed by parked domains (19 percent), e-shops and idle domains (8 percent); 7 percent of domains are private websites.
“In light of current macroeconomic indicators, these growth figures are a pleasant surprise. A prominent role is played by registrars, who do a great deal to strengthen demand for the .CZ domain with end customers,” says Ondřej Filip, managing director of CZ.NIC. “For example, they were mainly responsible last year for doubling the number of domains protected by DNSSEC technology to a total of 300,000,” adds Filip.
