At the end of last year, the European Commission announced the winners of the tender for Large-Scale Pilots intended to test the revolutionary concept of the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet). The winning EU Digital Identity Wallet Consortium (EWC), which brings together more than 60 organizations, including governments and experts from the travel and e-payment industries, also includes two organizations of Czech provenance: CZ.NIC, the Czech national domain administrator and Gen (formerly known as Avast).
The digital wallet is part of the proposed revision of the eIDAS regulation and will offer European citizens an alternative way to access a trusted digital identity provided by their government. This new concept changes the current mode of operation of digital identity from a centralized system to a decentralized one. This means that the user keeps his/her credentials, such as personal data, proof of studies, driving license or vaccination certificate, with him/her (for example in a mobile app) and provides them to specific services that require them only upon request. The identity will be used for both government and private sector services, payments, as well as other trusted services such as e-signatures.
“In this project, we intend to build on the successful RegeID project, in which we used European digital identity for the scope of domain registrations. At the same time, since we also operate the electronic identification system mojeID notified to the European Commission to the level of assurance "high", we meet the conditions of the current edition of the new eIDAS regulation for issuing wallets and therefore want to explore this area better. Thanks to the experience gained in the field of digital identity, especially in the context of the national solution for the Czech Republic, our experts can offer useful feedback to the consortium,” added Jaromír Talíř, technical partner of the CZ.NIC Association.
The EWC pilot project will focus primarily on the use of the wallet in the context of travel and the digital identity of an organization. Its outputs will primarily be used to fine-tune the technical parameters of the entire ecosystem of the European Digital Wallet.
